Early 1983, at a family event taking place at the home of Nick Marantos, brothers George, Nick and Argyris Anagnostopoulos together with George Troupakis discussed the idea of forming a Kalamata Society. Further discussions then took place with Peter Giannopoulos, Peter Flessas, Aristidis Soublis, John Panousopoulos, John Yiannacoulacos, Theo Kontos, Vasilis Athanasopoulos, Peter Christopoulos and others who originated from Kalamata. On the 19th June, 1983 an initial meeting took place at the Church Hall of St Constantine and Helen, Barry St, South Yarra whereby 63 people in attendance attended and agreed to naming the club “Society of Kalamata 23 March”.

The Society of Kalamata “23 March” is a non-profit volunteer organization established in 1983 by Greek migrants to Australia, whose ancestry hailed from the region of Kalamata, Messinia in the southern Peloponnese, to promote Greek culture, with a focus on the region of Messinia / Kalamata, Greece.
Our Mission
To provide a means of communication and interaction between members via social, cultural and sporting events. To commemorate the unique bonds between Greece and Australia that were formed when the Australians defended Greece in World War 2, especially in Kalamata and more broadly in Messinia. To promote, celebrate and sustain the social, cultural and historical traditions of Messinia with the broader Australian and Greek communities.
